Bike Riding For Exercise - How Effective is It?

Bike riding for exercise is one effective way of staying fit and toned and building physical endurance. In biking, almost all parts of the body are exercised, from the legs to the thighs to the abdomen and even the arms. Cycling, though, is more recommended to people who wish to strengthen the lower part of their body since the upper half does not get as much activity as the lower part when it comes to riding a bike.

Exercise for busy people

Bikes

Although riding road bikes along various terrain might be a lot more fun than cycling indoors, some people just don't have the time to venture outdoors and work on their fitness. For these busy individuals, there is the option of indoor biking. Exercise bikes for use inside the home or in gyms are readily available and serve the same function as road bikes. They can use either the recumbent or the upright type and choose from various brands like ProForm, Nautilus, Schwinn and Life Fitness.

How biking works the muscles

Cycling, even indoors, allows a person to strengthen his or her legs, thighs and glutes. It is an effective cardiovascular activity and can help tone the muscles and keep a person fit. Pedaling strengthens the legs and helps make the inner thighs firm. It also helps accelerate metabolism, increase heart rate and helps burn calories. A person can lose weight, become stronger and keep fit with a proper cycling program.

Equipment for the activity

For people who prefer a more strenuous exercise program, an upright exercise bike machine would be ideal. It is much the same as a road bike where the rider would be required to use the pedals in a vertical, albeit stationary, position. For individuals new to exercising, or those who suffer from back pains and injuries, the recumbent is the more preferred type of exercise equipment. A recumbent bike puts the rider in a more horizontal position, with a backrest to protect his back and the feet out in front for pedaling.

Modern features

To compensate for the lack of outdoor views and varying terrain, some manufacturers of indoor exercise bikes have incorporated virtual programs into their products wherein the rider can enter a virtual setting simulating an outdoor experience. Adjustable resistance features and pre-programmed add-ons also allow the rider to simulate uphill or downhill terrains, allowing him or her to vary the exercise program and move various muscles.

People interested in bike riding for exercise need to be careful before starting a cycling regimen. A consultation with a physical fitness expert on what type of program is the most appropriate and what equipment to use is the first step that should be taken by those who like cycling exercises. Just like outdoor biking, indoor cycling can also cause injuries and pains if the program is not done right and the activity is not guided or sanctioned by a physical fitness expert.

Tips For Buying Exercise Equipment From Craigslist

Do you want to get into shape? If so, you may turn to the internet and Craigslist.org to find a good deal on exercise equipment, but how can you make sure you are truly getting the best deal? Continue reading for a few buying tips.

Ask to see pictures. Most Craigslist sellers post pictures of the products they sell, but not all do. Photographs can give you great insight into a problem and they can be the deciding factor in whether or not you buy. A picture can let you know if you are buying a 10 year old treadmill or one released within the past five years. In terms of fitness equipment, like treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical trainers, and mountain bikes, newer is usually better.

Bikes

Make sure no important pieces are missing. Many people on Craigslist sell their old exercise equipment because they upgraded, but some sell because of missing or broken pieces. Unfortunately, not all Craigslist sellers are honest. Before buying an expensive piece of exercise equipment, make sure all parts are there. Specifically ask the seller.

Ask to make sure the item works or ask what repairs are needed. There shouldn't be any repairs needed unless you know about them upfront. If buying a mountain bike, it should be road ready. New tires or repairing a broken chain costs money. If you need to pay for repairs, figure their cost into the total of the bike. Be carefully because repairs can turn an otherwise good deal into an expensive one. With certain items, such as stationary exercise bikes, treadmills, and elliptical trainers, batteries are commonly needed to get the screen to work. Luckily, this will only cost you a few dollars.

Get the make and model number. This good for a number of reasons. You can do a little bit of research online to ensure you are getting the best deal on Craigslist. See the year the treadmill was released and look for reviews online. As previously, the best pieces of exercise equipment are new models, as well as those with good reviews online. You can also price compare. Since you are buying used, make sure you aren't paying full price. You should get a significant discount, like around 50% or more.

Tips For Buying Exercise Equipment From Craigslist

Finally, download a free Craigslist search tool, like the Craigslist Reader at MotionT.com. These programs enable you to search multiple cities, entire states, or all of Craigslist at once. Find the best deals on exercise equipment with ease and within minutes.

How the DP Exercise Bike Stacks Up Against Better Known Brands

The name DP exercise bike might not be as recognizable as other brands like Schwinn, Nautilus and ProForm, but this brand has been around for quite some time and is one of the most respected names in the physical fitness business. Currently, DP is better known for selling exercise bike parts and exercise equipment supplies.

Most DP indoor bikes are old models and are quite difficult to get hold of except in online stores and secondhand retailers. One of the models of DP that became quite popular was the DP Fit for Life Airgometer upright bike. This model costs around ,000 to ,200 and carries the basic features of an upright indoor bike.

Another model from the DP fitness brand is the Vita Master MBP2. It features various program settings and tension controls. It also has a heart-rate monitor and features battery operated controls. Aside from the Vita Master and the Airgometer, DP also offers DP Air Advantage, DP AirCisor, DP Prime Fit 6100, DP Sit for Life Aircizer and DP Vitamaster MD193.

DP has been overshadowed by more recognizable brands like Schwinn and ProForm. Schwinn, for one, has multiple models out in the market, including the 230 recumbent bike, the 130 upright and the Airdyne exercise bike. Scwhinn's products can cost from 0 to over ,000. One of the brand's more expensive model, the Evolution, sells at more than ,000 and has been highly rated by product reviewers. It features an inertia drive system, adjustable resistance and direct drive gearing.

ProForm, another brand competing with DP in the indoor bike market, offers machines that cost 0 to ,200. One of its low end models is the SR30. The features of this machine are very basic and the model is geared at entry level market. It features magnetic resistance, pulse sensors and an LCD console. Other ProForm models targeting the low end and middle markets are the SR80, GL 35 and GL 105.

The DP brand might not be at the top of the market, but its machines still serve the basic operating functions of exercise bikes. They offer users the ability to tone and strengthen leg and thigh muscles and provide an effective cardiovascular exercise routine. Limited availability aside, DP exercise machines, including the secondhand models being sold in online auction sites, might still be worth consumers' time and investment.

The DP exercise bike is not exactly hogging the physical fitness equipment limelight, but there are still those who like the brand. For these loyal customers, auction sites and online stores are their best options of finding one these products.

Exercise Bikes - Which Kind of Exercise Bike Is Right For You?

Buying an exercise bike? These bikes are some of most popular pieces of fitness equipment because they are affordable, easy to use and can last you a very long time.

But if you've started shopping, you'll probably notice that there are several different types of exercise bikes including upright, recumbent, semi-recumbent, dual action and even indoor cycling bikes. How do you choose the best one for your needs?

Bikes

This article will give you some background on different types of fitness bikes so you can decide which kind you want for your home exercise gym:

#1 Upright

Upright bikes were the only option you had for years. They look similar to an outdoor bike (but they don't have wheels, chains etc. to be mobile). They have a typical bicycle seat and your feet hang down to reach the pedals. Upright bikes come in all different price categories from starter to commercial grade models.

Some advantages of these bikes are that many experts think they are better at burning calories and tend to take up less space than a recumbent bike. They can also be a great way for cyclist to train indoors during the winter months.

#2 Recumbent

These have bucket-like seats and your legs are angled out (or slightly down) in front of you (instead of hanging down like in an upright model). Because the seats have more padding and better back support than upright bikes, these bikes are very popular with new exercisers, older users or anyone prone to injuries. They're also an excellent low-impact way to exercise for those who are just starting a fitness routine.

In addition to being more comfortable overall (than upright bikes), recumbent bikes also tend to be lower to the ground (less injuries) and have lots of built-in features like pre-programmed workouts, bright, LCD consoles and even mp3 docks with speakers.

#3 Semi-Recumbent

While this term can sometimes be used interchangeably with recumbent bikes, an actual semi-recumbent bike is a cross between the recumbent and the upright bike. The seat is similar to a recumbent seat but the pedals are angled a little lower than a regular recumbent (but not straight down as you'd find on an upright bike).

The benefits of this design is that many sellers claim you get the calorie-burning benefits of an upright bike combined with the comfort of a recumbent. However it is fair to note that these bikes are not as common or as easy to find as the first 2 options above.

#4 Dual Action Bike

This is a spin-off of the upright bike and there are only a few of these on the market as well. These bikes are similar to the upright bike but they also have movable bars or levers on arm handles to incorporate your upper body into the workout.

Using the upper body arm bars can help work your arms, chest, abs, and back muscles. This can increase overall aerobic intensity, burn more calories and provide a higher intensity workout challenge. Upper body arms can also help for those who don't want to work their legs as hard because of injury or muscle strain.

The downside is that the consoles on these bikes are very simple, They don't have all the fitness "extras" you get with recumbents like large, backlit consoles, loads of built-in workouts, heart rate monitors and iPod docks. They also don't give you the back support of a recumbent machine.

#5 Indoor Cycling Bikes

You've probably seen these types of exercise bikes at the local gym for their exercises classes. These are similar to upright bikes but much more advanced in terms of features. They are built mainly for the serious athlete or biking enthusiast for year-round training.

You can find everything on these bikes from drop handlebars (to simulate outdoor riding), onboard computers to track your workout stats and SPD-compatible pedals that can be used with professional cycling shoes.

The downside is that these bikes may be a bit more than the average exerciser needs (they also tend to cost more than the average recumbent bike).

So those are some of your options when it comes to buying an exercise bike. What you choose depends on your goals, lifestyle, health issues and workout preferences.

On the positive side, there's never been a better time to buy a fitness bike as they are more affordable and loaded with fun features than ever before. So you're sure to find a model that you love.

Upright exercise bikes, best exercise bike

In general, the new models means better features, but when it comes to bikes, this is not true. Although more recent mini exercise bike and recumbent exercise bikes are supposed to be better by the majority, that actually is not true, and the more conventional vertical oriented exercise bike offers more benefits than those species. For example, the fact that the bike more like the traditional vertical> Motorcycles, and how much space they occupy. Another big advantage is the sound, or lack of bicycles offered by modern vertical stationary.

Upright exercise bikes provide a driving experience more akin to a conventional bicycle than any other bike. Not only that the handlebar, seat and seat position as more like a conventional bike to another bike, exercise bike in a vertical position but you can rest and take aHow Race-mode does not allow mini exercise bike and exercise bike recumbent. This is a huge advantage as it allows for much more stress on the legs, however, leading to greater development of muscular strength and burn more calories.

Bikes

Another feature that is offered by stationary exercise bikes recumbent bikes in contrast with the space they occupy. Upright exercise bike these days takes up little space and can usuallybe easily removed. Now, even if they are not in competition with regard to training in this mini-bikes, upright exercise bike-the lower field usually offer far more features of a mini exercise bike. The element of conservation is essential, as for the apartment residents and the like every space is precious.

Noise is another factor that may be put to shame an upright exercise bike every other type of exercise bike. Most of the exercise of cycling in an upright position magnetic systems very quiet but very efficient with which you watch TV or listen to music or maybe even read during training without interfering with loud noise to allow all the time. Although some have the strength to do this are easy for people, the cool breeze and the rustic atmosphere of the fan prefer, but these are rare in those days.

How visible is not only an upright exercise bike offers a more realistic feel and take up less space than other fixed> Motorcycles, but not all quiet, then you will really enjoy your workout.
