How the DP Exercise Bike Stacks Up Against Better Known Brands

The name DP exercise bike might not be as recognizable as other brands like Schwinn, Nautilus and ProForm, but this brand has been around for quite some time and is one of the most respected names in the physical fitness business. Currently, DP is better known for selling exercise bike parts and exercise equipment supplies.





Most DP indoor bikes are old models and are quite difficult to get hold of except in online stores and secondhand retailers. The features of this machine are very basic and the model is geared at entry level market. It features magnetic resistance, pulse sensors and an LCD console. Other ProForm models targeting the low end and middle markets are the SR80, GL 35 and GL 105.

The DP brand might not be at the top of the market, but its machines still serve the basic operating functions of exercise bikes. They offer users the ability to tone and strengthen leg and thigh muscles and provide an effective cardiovascular exercise routine. Limited availability aside, DP exercise machines, including the secondhand models being sold in online auction sites, might still be worth consumers' time and investment.

The DP exercise bike is not exactly hogging the physical fitness equipment limelight, but there are still those who like the brand. For these loyal customers, auction sites and online stores are their best options of finding one these products.

Bobber Kits - A Bobber in Every Box

Bobber kits contain all the parts you need to build a bobber.  But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, the question begs to be asked - what is a bobber?  It sounds like some sort of thingamabob you use when fishing.  Well, admittedly, there is something called a bobber in the world of fishing, but the bobber in question here is the type of motorcycle called a bobber.  Why the name bobber?  Because of the way that the rear fender is "bobbed" or cut short, like the tail on a bobcat. 





The bobber has been a figure in the motorcycle scene for about 5 decades now, since right after World War II.  The Second World War was a terrible event, but it showed just how connected everyone is to one another.  One interesting result is that American men in the military service, who spent time in Europe, grew to favor the style of motorcycles there.  At that time, bikes in the USA were rather heavyset and a little bulky, while European models were light, simple and minimalist.  On coming back from the war, these men congregated in motorcycle clubs.  In order to simulate that "light" appearance, war veterans cut off sections of the rear fender and some removed the front fenders completely.  What came out was what eventually became known as the bobber.  This movement was also what gave rise to the chopper subculture, as popularized on television.

Motorcycle kits are now available in the market, and so are bobber kits.  Many of these motorcycle kits are actually designed in the chopper style, with an aesthetic that matches the customization culture of bikes today.  Because choppers are more popular in the collective conscience today, it is a common mistake to think that bobbers are derived from choppers, when the truth is actually the other way around.  Bobbers were stock motorcycles with their rear fenders bobbed and front fenders possibly removed or shortened likewise.  Choppers came from the idea of removing unnecessary parts, ergo "chopping" them off, to give a sleeker, lighter appearance.  Thus, windshields, fenders, engine cowlings, sissy bars and other features outside the minimal requirements for a single rider were removed.  Some other parts were replaced, like headlights and exhaust pipes.  The exposed look, with the engine in full view and tubes running every which way, plus the "raked" front fork, and lowered central chassis became what we now know as choppers.  Strangely enough, this applied "backwards" to bobbers, which led to the current confusion of terms.  A new term came up for these "bobbed" choppers, and they are called bopper choppers.  Some say that if the front end is not changed, it is a bobber, while it becomes a chopper if the front is lengthened.  Regardless, the bobbed nature of these rides can justify them as bobbers in essence.

Fat Bastards - No Copyright Infringement Intended

One of the most popular variants of bobbers, and thus bobber motorcycle kits, is generally called a Fat Bastard.  It is unknown whether the term came before or after a certain comedy movie featuring a swinging British secret agent, but regardless there is no copyright infringement here.  So how does a motorcycle become a Fat Bastard?  The "Bastard" part comes from the fact that it is a mixture of bobber and chopper, ergo a bastard of the two.  The other part of the name, "Fat", comes from these having very chunky rear tires.  The fender-less nature of bobbers led to experimentation with wheel sizes, and that is how the Fat Bastard was born.  These have normal-wide front tires but a very wide rear tire.  The result is a very iconic look and eye-catching appeal.  Fat Bastards, as previously mentioned, are also available in kit form.  The term "bastard" is not very favorable though, so some vendors use terms like "wide tire" or "wide rear tire".  Building a bobber by cutting off parts of the fenders may not appeal to some people, and that is why these kits are available.  It does make a certain sense, since consumers probably won't want to buy their own oxyacetylene torches for just one job.  In the end, buying a kit like this can save you money, rather than buying stock and then putting it to the torch.

Bobber Motorcycle - Why the Kits Then?

So ithese motorcycles can be made by custom fabricators, why bother with bobber kits and motorcycle kits in general?  Offering these personal vehicles in kits gives some very distinct advantages.  For one, they consume less space than fully-built units, so sellers can save on storage.  The savings extend to the user, who can then use what they save on the unit cost for shipping.  Speaking of shipping, it is easier to transport kits rather than the entire pre-built vehicles, and so it is also cheaper.  Finally there is the satisfaction from doing it yourself.  There is something about having the opportunity to build something that you like and that you will use often on your own that appeals to many people.  A positive side effect is that those who build their own bikes will tend to take better care of their bikes, as compared to those who buy it stock.  Perhaps what also appeals is taking it to the next step. After buying a kit and building it up, the next part would be to attach custom parts or detailing.  Paint jobs, decals, even custom fabricated parts, these are all part of the customization culture that is all the rage with motorcycles today.  With a little more time and money, one could turn a kit ride into something unique and totally their own.  Then again, maybe you want a motorcycle for the fun of riding it. 

Taking to the blacktop on something you made with your own hands is more satisfying than using stock machines.  With a motorcycle kit like this, there is a bobber in every box for every weekend rider or hardcore chopper.  Just make sure to follow the construction instructions!

Dress For Cold Weather Motorcycle Riding

Riding your motorcycle during cold wet weather requires planning, foresight and the right gear. Clothing that seems fine when you are driving your car or walking down the street in the rain probably wont cut it at 70 miles an hour on your motorcycle. It takes the right gear to keep you warm under these extreme conditions. Buy gear designed for motorcycling. There is a difference. Women riders have had a tough time finding gear made for them at an affordable price until fairly recently. Happily myself and other vendors are offering affordable quality gear tailored for women.

Bikes


Insulating Layer: The insulating layer creates dead air space between the layers of clothing, trapping warm body air and keeping it around the body. Look for outerwear that is warm, water-resistant and well insulated with a synthetic fiber such as Thinsulate Insulation.


Outer Shell: This layer protects against wind and rain. This is probably the most important layer.

Outerwear Machine-washable jackets retain their waterproofing better than those that require dry-cleaning. Jackets with sealed seams also prevent water from getting in. If you wear a non-leather jacket get one designed for motorcycling. That stylish 0 jacket you bought at the department store probably won't work as well as a 0 jacket you buy from me because it's not designed for motorcycling. Leather is a great wind stopper. A well made leather jacket designed for motorcycling will last for years, keep you comfortable and protect you in a skid.

Look for outerwear containing Thinsulate and similar Insulation, it provides about 1 ½ times the warmth of down and nearly twice the warmth of other high-loft insulators when equal thicknesses are compared. Look for features such as cuffs that close tightly to keep out cold air and snow, zippers with large nylon teeth, and storm flaps over the zippers and double breasted chest openings to block wind and water. Cuffs, pockets and chest closures with multiple closure systems such as zippers and snaps or zippers ,velcro and snaps tend to stop more wind.

Zip out liners are very handy. You can remove your liner when it is warm in the afternoon, store it in your saddlebag and put it back in when the temperature dips.

Add leather or string ties to zippers etc so you can open and close them with your gloves on.

Your neck Nehru or Euro style collars on jackets tend to cover the neck better. A turtle neck sweater will help some. In really cold weather a balaclava or a leather riding mask will make a big difference. Remember to cover your neck! By the time you have traveled a half a mile in cold weather you will know if you forgot to cover that adam's apple!

Legs Protect your legs from the wind. There are a variety of choices for protecting your legs. Chaps, Leather pants and Textile pants. I sell a variety of these items in various price ranges. All of my items are designed for motorcycling. Once again wear layers; thermal underwear and lined pants or chaps to block the wind. When it gets cold a pair of Levis and long johns won't do it!

Footwear Wet feet become cold and numb quickly, keep your feet dry by wearing appropriate boots. When your feet become wet (through sweating or immersion) you need to put on dry, fresh socks. Insulated boots help. Wear socks made of synthetic fibers like polyester and polypropylene. Make sure your boots are loose enough to comfortably wear thick socks. Avoid steel toe boots. A pair of cold feet will ruin an otherwise great ride!

Headgear You loose most of your heat through your head and neck! Wear a full face helmet with face shield for optimum comfort. Leather masks cover the neck and lower face. Balaclavas cover the neck, face and insulate your head.

Gloves Waterproof gloves lined with synthetic insulation such as Thinsulate insulation are effective insulators, keep your hands covered at all times. The savvy rider has several pairs of gloves designed for various riding conditions: Fingerless gloves for warm summer riding. This cuts down on vibration, reduces calluses and offers some protection in a skid. Zip Cuff Gauntlet gloves The next choice is usually flexible gloves with thin lining that offer wind protection and a gauntlet cuff to keep wind from blowing up the jacket sleeves. I carry a pair all the time in my saddlebag along with a pair of cotton liners to add when it gets cold. They are handy even on cool summer nights.For really cold weather I wear a pair of thick gauntlet motorcycling / ski gloves with thick insulate lining. Gauntlet cuff gloves are very important. They fit over the jacket sleeve and keep ice cold air from blowing up to your arm pits at 70 miles an hour!

Mittens keep hands warmer than gloves but offer less dexterity. They are a definite no-no for riders or passengers. You can't feel the controls and the passenger can't hold on!

Rain Gear

Keep a set of nylon rain gear in your saddlebag for each person on the bike. They don't weigh much but they are a real life saver when the rain or sleet starts coming down.

Just my opinion on heated clothes. They work great when they work! I used to wear a heated vest and heated socks. I stayed warm and toasty even in really cold weather. One day in January one of my heated socks quit working, I didn't realize it. I froze a couple of toes and darn near lost them. That was enough for me!

A few general observations:

Avoid real tight clothing. You loose that insulating warm air layer when you wear a jacket, pants or boots that are too tight.

Dress for comfort and protection. Wearing your beany and a denim jacket when the chill factor dips below 30 only impresses dummies. Surprisingly this occurs at about 45 degrees F at 70 mph!

Bring gear for the worst weather you may run into. You probably will. Those nice 70 degree October days sometimes turn into a rainy 35 degree ride home.

WIND CHILL

The cooling effect of wind at 70 mph is astounding. Plan carefully before you leave. At about 10 degrees fahrenheit you are entering very dangerous territory. Wind chill is not something to fool with:

4. WHAT TO LOOK FOR; SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

a. Watch for stumbles, mumbles and fumbles which show changes in motor coordination and levels of consciousness. Having troubles with controls, have to consciously think about where the brakes are etc. STOP AND GET WARM. DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL, THAT REDUCES BLOOD FLOW AND MAKES IT WORSE. A WARM DRINK WITH SUGAR HELPS.

b. Mild Hypothermia - core temperature 98.6 - 96 degrees F

AT THIS POINT YOU CAN MAKE DANGEROUS MISTAKES; FORGET TO PUT ON THE BRAKES, OVER OR UNDERSTEER A CURVE. ( ONE TIME I STOPPED FOR A RED LIGHT AND FORGOT TO TAKE MY FEET OFF THE PEGS!) Shivering - not under voluntary control Can't do complex motor functions, can still walk & talk Vasoconstriction to periphery

c. Moderate Hypothermia - core temperature 95 - 93 degrees F

Dazed consciousness Loss of fine motor coordination - particularly in hands - can't zip up your jacket, due to restricted blood flow to the hands.Slurred speech Violent shivering Irrational behavior - Paradoxical Undressing - person starts to take off clothing, unaware s/he is cold MANY SYMPTOMS LIKE BEING STONED. A person in this condition needs help. Immediately get them indoors. They may not be able to make good decisions for themselves. If you or someone riding with you reaches this point reassess your plans; Make frequent stops to warm up, get a room for the night or park the bike and get better gear. You are taking a serious risk!

d. Severe Hypothermia - core temperature 92 - 86 degrees and below

(immediately life threatening) You won't have any trouble noticing this stage. The person falls down, curls into a fetal position appears to die! Shivering occurs in waves, violent then pause, pauses get longer until shivering finally ceases - because the heat output from burning glycogen in the muscles is not sufficient to counteract the continually dropping core temperature, the body stops shivering to conserve glucose. Person falls to the ground, can't walk, curls up into a fetal position to conserve heat. Muscle rigidity develops - because peripheral blood flow is reduced and due to lactic acid and CO2 buildup in the muscles. Skin is pale Pupils dilate Pulse rate decreases at 90 degrees the body tries to move into hibernation, shutting down all peripheral blood flow and reducing breathing rate and heart rate. At 86 degrees the body is in a state of "metabolic icebox." The person looks dead but is still alive.

Make sure your passenger is dressed right before you leave. They may not know how to dress. It's up to you to help them make the right choice. And guess who is going to listen to them nag to wear your nice warm jacket on the way home if they don't?

Keep these guidelines in mind the next time you venture out on that motorcycle in cold weather.

You don't have to park that bike when fall rolls around. Just dress right and enjoy!

Breathable Layer: This is the layer that comes in contact with the skin. It should allow body moisture to escape and evaporate more quickly, which keeps the skin dry and comfortable. Use thermal underwear made of synthetic fibers like polyester and polypropylene to wick moisture away from the skin. Avoid natural fibers such as cotton, they tend to hold moisture close to the skin and dry very slowly.

How to Build a Go Kart - 5 Go Kart Building Secrets

To make a go kart that corners on rails like a Porche, looks like a Ferrari and turns all your neighbor's heads we need to back up the truck and go to the beginnings.





In short hand, there are five steps to making a simple frame. First of all the following steps are:


Bikes


1. Engine And Passenger Layout
2. Drive Train System
3. Steering System
4. Brake System
5. Throttle System


Let's get into it now....

1. Engine And Passenger Layout

First of all the assumption, whether this go-kart is made out of wood or is made out of steel is that you have some sort of layout in mind. Typically the engine is behind, and the person sits in front of the engine. A good safe layout is to have a seat protect the passenger from the engine.

So a structure of some sort is needed to hold the seat in place. You can use a seat off of a chair, but a more protective seat is a ½ piece of plywood angled back and supported. Covering the piece of wood is optional, but it is more comfortable with basically a piece of heavy cloth covering a cushion. The cloth is stapled typically into the board (on the backside).

The structure supporting the seat can be wood, or steel.

The frame work can be wood or steel as well. If using wood, use two by fours placed vertically, so that the strength of the wood is optimized.

If you are using steel for the frame, use a tubing that is at least .070 wall or thicker. The length of the frame is really dictated by how big the person is. Have a person sit comfortably in the leaned back position with a steering wheel in their hands. That is the person compartment. Measure this length.

Add the engine drive section and the person compartment lengths together and that is the length of the gokart. Cut your frame tubes (or tack tubes together) to this length. You will need at least two parallel lengths of tubing.

Space the tubes apart the width of the seat you made (20 inches is a good width).

Cut at least four (4) tubes to the 20 inch length. Lay all the pieces on the floor. Place the 20 inchers at the following locations: Engine Plate area, seat back section, seat forward section, front main bumper tube, and rear main bumper tube. (The bumper tubes can be wider than the frame by 12 inches (6 inches per side).)

Tack the tubes in place using a welder. If you do not have a welder, then you can fasten them together using plates and bolts. (Trust me, buy a 0 welder and save yourself wood chips and drill bits, busted knuckles and exasperation!)

What you have put together now is what I term a "flat-go kart." You will soon find out that flat gokart frames are weak and require extra stiffening. You may want to put some struts into the system to bolster the frame design. Typically what I use is the seat back as reference. This works very well as an integral frame support, side seat holder, and engine protector.

2. Drive Train System

The next sequence is to place your engine and drive train system in place. At the same time put your seat in position to make sure the seat and engine are not hitting each other. Be sure to make the seat removable so that you can actually work on the engine system when needed.

When placing your engine typically a plate is needed to hold the engine onto the frame. Some designers use tubes with holes drilled in them for engine placement. I prefer the plate option, because it gives me greater options as far as engine choices in the future.

For example on the Phi-Alpha-10 and the Phi-Alpha-9 (go karts I designed) the engine plate served well in allowing me to use different engines, whether Briggs and Stratton, Tecumseh or even Honda. All engine types could be easily mounted just by drilling the holes in the motor mount plate.

Most go karts use a slot system to keep the chain tight. In other words, the engine is mounted not using holes but slots. That works, but honestly, drilling slots is intensive works and requires some patience and thought. So I prefer tensioning the chain, it works better on multiple fronts. (I can go on and on about engines, drive trains and such...but we have got to keep moving here...)

A word about drive systems: A live axle system is really the way to go. All you have to do is mount two bearing brackets and away you go. On a one wheel drive system, you need to have special rims that contain bearings, special drive sprockets that connect to the tires, and the axle if it gets bent, you have to cut it out of the frame and start over....so use a live axle...

But, that is not all true. You can get away with using old lawnmower wheels if they have bushings in them. They work great for acting as bearings. Grease snot out of the axel-hub interface and away you go. Be sure to retain the wheel with a cross bolt that is at least grade 5.

3. Steering System

So after having mounted the rear axle (with brake disc (or brake drum) and sprocket), and having placed the engine and chain system in place, proceed to mounting the front steering system.

Before we did some measurements of the person sitting in the comfortable position, make sure you remember the measurement (relative to the go kart frame) of the steering wheel. That is the target point for the steering wheel.

The actual position of the front wheels is a bit more involved though. You will need a scale. Place the scale first of all under the rear wheels. I typically use a board placed across the rear frame rails underneath the wheel area. Have someone sit in the go kart. (Be sure to a have the front wheels, steering wheel and steering structure on the go kart when you weigh it)

Now proceed to the front of the go kart and place the board in the general area that you want the steering system. Again weigh the go kart.

Take the two weights and add them together. That is the total weight. The front weight ideally should be with-in 5 to ten pounds of the rear weight. This is called 50/50 weight distribution. The more weight you have on the rear, the more the go kart will under-steer. Meaning, when you turn the wheel the go kart will tend to keep going straight. The more weight you have on the front wheels, the more the go kart will over steer. Most drivers are used to under-steer, it is easier to recover from.

But I digress...

Once you have placed the front wheels in place then fix the front steering system in place there. I typically use plates, so that I can move the steering system back or forward. So I weld mating plates on the frame and the steering system, then bolt them together.

For wood go karts, you can actually design a very stable wood go kart using the carriage style steering as long as the steering is supported an not aloud to twist.

A word on steering systems: You can purchase from the store steering assemblies that you tack onto tubes. These work real well, with one exception, they typically come in .750 inch diameter shafts, where most high speed bearings use .625 diameter shafts. The shafts may need replacement. Look for .625 shafts... Additionally, there are ways to make the steering more tractable and more user friendly, these involve geometric relationships such as camber, caster, Ackerman and so forth.

4. Brake System

Now that you have the steering system in position, you can button up the hole project by covering the bottom of the go kart. Sheet metal (like furnace guys use) is the best option. Buy some tech screws (the ones with drills on their ends) and zip through the sheet metal into the tubing. Once you have that in place, you don't have to worry about your feet hitting the ground!

Now it is time to place the brake system. You notice we placed the brakes in place on the live axle, now the actual braking mechanism needs to be mounted to the frame work. You can either weld it, or bolt it to the frame. I prefer bolting, it is more forgiving and easier to repair.

A word on brake float: The brake system should float. What that means is that the disc either needs to be mounted freely on the shaft, or the brake caliper needs to float. If the neither is floating, you will get a binding, and prematurely worn out brakes, and fast! So keep that in mind. Something has to float, the disc or the brake caliper (1 of the 5!)

For your brakes it is important to have the brake off while driving. A good spring is needed to keep the pedal back when the brake is not being used.

On a wood go kart be sure to use the same thought into the brake system. A lot of force is going into the brake boards so be sure to account for this in the brake mechanism which usually involves force multiplier linkages.

5. Throttle System

This seems like the most inane or over looked system on the go kart. It shouldn't be though. A good connection between the throttle and the pedal is needed and a good range of motion is needed too. Most pedals give you different holes to work with, allowing your several options in throttle actuation.

Again, like the brake, a good spring is needed. Do not use a spring on the carburetor, but use the spring in the pedal, or pedal system.

A word about throttles: most engines come with governors. It is a good idea to use the governor system, because it helps keep the engine at even speeds and from over revving.

Cyclocross Bikes - The Sport Utility Vehicle You Pedal

Do you want a bike that is faster than a mountain bike on road but tougher than a road bike? You might need a cyclocross bike and not even know it. Cyclocross is an off road sport that runs in the fall. The courses are on grass, mud and dirt roads with sections with barriers that the riders must dismount and run over. The laps tend to be short making for a spectator friendly type of racing. Cyclocross started in Europe as an off season sport for road racers but has grown into it's own specialty. The bikes that have grown out of this sport have to be fast and light but tough with lots of traction due to the conditions. Even if you don't race cyclocross, this type of bike may be the best option for all round riding.





Cyclocross bikes look a lot like a road race bike until you look closely. While they have the drop handlebars of a road bike, they run mountain bike cantilever or disc brakes. This means more stopping power is messy conditions and more clearance so fatter tires fit in the frame. This increased clearance also allows for the running of fenders for wet weather training and commuting. The frame geometry is a little more relaxed than a road bike so they are stable on slippery trails. This carries over to winter riding where that stability and the room to run studded tires make these great four season bikes.


Bikes


Cyclocross bikes are available made from all of the popular frame materials including steel, aluminum, titanium and carbon fiber. Depending on what you would like to use the bike for you can get very streamlined models specifically for racing or more utilitarian designs that have rack and fender mounts. The cyclocross bike is a jack of all trades. Put a road racing tire on and you can go on club group rides. Put on your racks and wider tires to turn it into a commuting or touring bike. I build a lot of cyclocross bikes for people that never get raced. They use them as an all round machine that is at home on both roads and dirt trails. Faster than a mountain bike but you can take it places a road bike could never go.


Most bike companies offer cyclocross options but for racing I recommend the Kuota Kross, a full carbon speed machine and for all round use you can't beat the Surly Cross Check.

When there are hordes of people chilling out on the beaches how can you make a style statement?
